The project is implemented as part of the international research initiative - CORNET and financed by the National Center for Research and Development
implementation period: 01/05/2014 - 30/04/2016
The Polish Chamber of Packaging, as part of the action program to increase the innovation of packaging produced by the Polish industry, is the initiator and coordinator of an international research project implemented as part of the international research initiative - CORNET.
At present, food waste accounts for about 1.3 billion tons per year, or about one-third of total food production. In Europe, fruit and vegetable waste accounts for around 20% of production at all stages of the distribution chain. Currently, most often used for packaging food are micro- and nanoperforated plastic films and materials with high barrier properties that enable the packaging of modified atmosphere products (MAP). None of the mentioned materials has been optimized for products characterized by varying intensity of breathing, ie variable oxygen demand and CO2 production capacity, such as vegetables, fruits or some types of cheese. Perforated materials do not allow selectivity or control of gas exchange, while the composition of modified atmosphere in packaging with high barrier materials changes as a result of the product breathing processes (wear in O2 breathing processes and CO2 production), which after a short period of time carries a risk of hypoxia and ultimately creating anaerobic conditions.
The project aims to develop a packaging material with selective O2 / CO2 permeability for packaging fresh products, the use of which will extend the shelf life of "breathable" products by regulating gas exchange and thus oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability through the packaging material. the type of food will allow to protect the products, slow down natural decay processes and prolong their durability .It is particularly important for ready-made fruit and vegetable salads that have recently attracted a lot of interest from consumers. The extension of the period in which such products can cross the road from the farmer and the processor the consumer usually achieves this by lowering the storage temperature or adding preservatives The project assumes achieving this effect by obtaining packaging that is optimal for the type food gas exchange.
The project is aimed at satisfying the needs of all interested market sectors, ie all the links in the packaging and food products chain by providing companies from the entire packaging production chain - knowledge, results and concepts developed within the project, which will allow them to continue and further develop the developed concepts and putting them on the market.
Implementers:
The project will be implemented by 10 units from 3 countries (Belgium, Germany and Poland) of which 3 national units are: Polish Chamber of Packaging (PIO) - association and two research units: COBRO - Packaging Research Institute and West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin (ZUT) .
